Your body and mind are always in conversation—healing begins when we learn to listen.

My story was a lot like yours...

Before my nephew’s diagnosis, my life looked a lot like what many people would call “normal.” I grew up immersed in the Standard American Diet — boxed foods, drive-thru dinners, sugary drinks, and very little awareness of what I was putting into my body. Nutrition was never something we talked about at home or school; it wasn’t part of our education or our example. Health was something you thought about only when something went wrong.

I lived in a constant state of fatigue and tension, long before I ever understood what chronic stress really was. From the age of ten, I suffered from debilitating migraines that often left me in dark rooms for hours. As I got older, I also battled ADHD, an auditory learning disorder, chronic insomnia, depression, anxiety, irritability, and moments of suicidal ideation. My mind was constantly racing, my body was exhausted, and sleep never seemed to restore me. I thought this was just how life was — that being “wired but tired” was normal.

My family, like many in rural America, worked hard in modern farming. We were proud of our roots, but we didn’t realize that the very fields surrounding us were treated with glyphosate — the same chemical that silently affected the health of the people and animals we loved. We had no idea that the air we breathed, the water we drank, and the food we ate were all part of an unseen ecosystem impacting our wellbeing.

By age 24, my body began to show the cost of that disconnect. I developed Bell’s Palsy — half my face paralyzed overnight. At 30, I was diagnosed with arthritis, my body aching like it belonged to someone decades older. I was burnt out, unbalanced, and living in survival mode. I was doing all the “right things” according to conventional standards, yet I was sicker and more exhausted than ever.

I didn’t know then that my symptoms were messengers — my body’s way of saying something deeper was wrong. It wasn’t until my nephew was diagnosed with cancer that everything I believed about health, healing, and how we live came crashing down — and, ultimately, began to rebuild into something new.

My Standard American Life
The Turning Point

When Mikah was diagnosed, our world stopped. My sister — his mother — refused to accept “there’s nothing more we can do” as an answer. She turned page after page, desperate to understand what was happening inside her little boy’s body. She called every doctor she could find, read every research article, and searched for hope in every experimental treatment modern medicine had to offer.

But even with all her effort, the answers never seemed to reach the why. Why did a bright, kind, six-year-old boy develop a disease that no child should ever have to face? Why was this happening to our family — one that had followed every conventional rule of “normal living”?

It wasn’t until she opened The Metabolic Approach to Cancer by Dr. Nasha Winters that something finally clicked. For the first time, she saw the body not as broken, but as communicating — and that true healing begins with understanding the terrain of the body, not just treating the tumor. That realization changed everything about how our family understood health, illness, and life itself.

But it came too late for Mikah. On November 5, 2024, surrounded by love, he took his last breath in his mother’s arms. He was six years old. His laughter, his kindness, and his gentle spirit left a permanent imprint on everyone who knew him.

His passing shattered us — but it also woke us up. It ignited something deeper: a calling to live differently, to heal differently, and to never again overlook the connection between our environment, our nutrition, our stress, and our spirit.

From that moment forward, our family began a journey to reclaim what health truly means. We moved away from processed foods, pesticides, and passive living — and toward organic, whole, intentional choices. We began to heal from the inside out, honoring Mikah’s legacy by transforming the very way we live.

That shift — born from heartbreak and hope — became the foundation for Oak Therapy & Wellness: a space where true healing is not about managing symptoms, but about nurturing the roots of wellbeing — mind, body, and soul.

About Oak

I became a counselor because I know what it’s like to feel lost in the process of healing — to want understanding, not just answers.

Therapy, for me, is about walking beside others as they find their way back to themselves. It’s about creating a space where people feel safe, seen, and deeply supported as they navigate life’s pain, patterns, and possibilities. My purpose is to help others rediscover their strength, reconnect with their bodies, and realize that healing is possible — even when the path looks different than they imagined.

Welcome to Oak Therapy & Wellness, a space created for healing, growth, and self-discovery. My practice is grounded in the belief that true wellness begins when we honor the connection between the mind, body, and spirit. Through integrative mental health, I blend traditional psychotherapy with holistic, evidence-based approaches that support the whole person—not just the symptoms.

Living with chronic illness for over 14 years has deeply shaped how I show up as a therapist. It’s taught me that healing is not linear—it’s a journey that requires compassion, balance, and patience with ourselves. This lived experience allows me to meet clients with genuine empathy and understanding, creating a therapeutic relationship built on trust and authenticity.

In my practice, I work collaboratively with individuals and couples to explore the deeper layers of emotional and relational patterns. My integrative approach weaves together mindfulness, attachment theory, nervous system regulation, and trauma-informed care to help you reconnect with your sense of self, improve relationships, and find steadiness in both body and mind.

Areas of Focus

  • Marriage & Couples Counseling – Strengthening communication, rebuilding trust, and nurturing emotional intimacy.

  • Attachment & Relational Work – Exploring early attachment patterns to promote healthier connections and secure relationships.

  • Trauma Therapy – Providing a safe and supportive space to process past experiences, release emotional pain, and foster resilience.

  • Individual Counseling – Supporting adults through anxiety, depression, chronic illness, grief, and life transitions with compassion and care.

At Oak Therapy & Wellness, I see therapy as a collaborative journey. My role is to walk alongside you—to listen deeply, to honor your story, and to help you reconnect with your inner wisdom and strength. Healing is not just about feeling better—it’s about becoming whole, grounded, and aligned with the life you want to live.

What I Hope for the Future

Dr. Nasha Winters’ Terrain Advocate Program is a comprehensive training that teaches practitioners, coaches, and health professionals how to apply the Metabolic Terrain approach to cancer and chronic illness. The program is based on the principles from her book The Metabolic Approach to Cancer, which emphasizes that disease doesn’t occur in isolation — it develops in a body whose internal “terrain” (nutrition, environment, stress, toxins, inflammation, sleep, mindset, and more) has become imbalanced.

I plan to graduate with this certificate program in 2026!

A Terrain Advocate is trained to:

  • Assess and understand the 10 key terrain elements that influence overall health (such as nutrition, microbiome, blood sugar regulation, toxins, and emotional wellbeing).

  • Support clients in identifying and addressing root causes rather than just managing symptoms.

  • Collaborate with medical and wellness professionals to create personalized, integrative care plans.

  • Empower clients with education, lifestyle guidance, and practical tools to restore balance to their terrain — supporting both prevention and healing.

Graduates work in the integrative and functional health space, helping clients make informed, sustainable changes that promote whole-body wellness. They serve as educators, guides, and advocates for health sovereignty — bridging the gap between conventional medicine and holistic healing.

My goal is to guide clients toward understanding how lifestyle, nutrition, environment, and emotional balance all play vital roles in overall wellness. By combining the principles of terrain-based healing with therapeutic insight, I hope to offer a truly comprehensive approach—one that honors the body’s innate ability to restore itself when given the proper care, awareness, and support.

This next step represents not only a professional milestone, but a continuation of my commitment to holistic, integrative healing. I look forward to walking alongside clients as they cultivate balance, vitality, and connection within every part of themselves.
